Survey of Spanish comedias sueltas printed before 1834 in the collections of US libraries
It is hoped that the many components of this website will energize scholars of Golden-Age drama to look at these objects from the past with renewed interest. The database is at the core of the website and the decision to include images of the sueltas with the bibliographic records is intended to spark interest in new areas of investigation, including that of printing history and book commerce in 18th-century Spain. In addition, the materiality of these inexpensively printed, popular entertainments can help us understand not only their seeming ubiquity, but also the reception history of the plays over time. The performances of these entertainments are almost entirely unrecoverable, but these unassuming 'separates' perdure in numbers sufficiently large to invite more detailed study.
